Peony in perfume: what it smells like and which FAAN bottles use it

Quick answer: Peony perfume notes smell soft, pink and fresh, like a rose with the sweetness turned down and a hint of green, watery pepper. One FAAN bottle has it: Qasida Senses, in the heart, with Bourbon vanilla, iris, coconut and Damask rose. It is made for her, and listed for spring and summer.
We are an independent retailer, and every placement here comes from the note pyramid on the product page. Peony is not listed on any other FAAN bottle.
What peony smells like (and what it does not)
Peony smells delicate and pink: lightly rosy, fresh and slightly watery, with a green, faintly peppery edge. It is not as heavy or sweet as rose, and it is cleaner than most florals. Think of a bouquet on a table in an airy room, not a perfume counter.
Peony flowers give almost no scent oil, so the note in a perfume is built by a perfumer from floral and green materials. It is a composed note, in the same way as lily of the valley. That does not make it less real as a smell.
It is not jasmine, which is heavier and creamy, and it is not a rose, although the two overlap. If you want to understand the rose side, see rose in perfume and in FAAN bottles.
How perfumers use peony: top, heart or base
Peony is a heart note, nearly always. It gives a floral centre a fresh, soft, rosy lift that makes a perfume feel airy. It fits well in fruity-floral scents, where it links the juicy fruit of the top to the creamy notes of the base. It is not used in the base, because it is too delicate to last there.

The full pyramid: jasmine, pear, bergamot, orange essence, pink pepper, raspberry and red berries on top. Peony in a heart with Bourbon vanilla, iris, coconut, Damask rose and lily of the valley. White musk, sandalwood, patchouli and woody notes in the base. Senses is a 200 ml Eau de Parfum from the Qasida line. Our one-line description: pear, peony and soft vanilla. The Senses review goes into more detail.
What it is paired with in these pyramids
- Damask rose: the classic partner. Rose gives depth and sweetness, peony gives freshness.
- Lily of the valley: another airy, green-white floral that keeps the heart light.
- Iris: a powdery, soft note that rounds off the freshness.
- Bourbon vanilla and coconut: creamy and warm, they stop the florals from feeling thin.
- Pear and raspberry: the top is juicy, so peony has fruit to play against.
Wearing advice
Senses is rated 3 out of 5 for strength and 3 for longevity. It is polite and soft, so three sprays is fine. It is listed for spring and summer, daily wear and evenings, and peony is at its best when warm air lifts it. In cold weather the heart is muted, so use a spray on a scarf and read Senses in winter. People who tend to like peony: those who like fresh, soft florals and fruity-floral scents. People who may not: those who find florals too sweet or too perfumey.
If you like peony, start with Qasida Senses
A word on how Senses uses it. Peony sits in the middle of a long heart of six notes, so it is one voice in a bouquet and not a solo. You will smell it as a soft, fresh pink thread running through the rose and iris, most clearly in the second hour, after the pear and raspberry have settled. If you are looking for a single-flower peony scent, this is a bouquet, and a rather creamy one.
It is the only choice in the range, and it is an easy one if you like fruity florals. If you want a soft floral without the fruit, Qasida Purity has white flowers and pear and is the quietest bottle in the range. Browse all fourteen bottles, or use which FAAN perfume to choose. If Senses shows as sold out, ask to be notified on the product page.
