Jasmine in perfume: what it smells like and which FAAN bottles use it

Quick answer: Jasmine perfume notes smell heady, sweet and creamy, with a green edge and sometimes a faint fruit-tea note. Five FAAN bottles list jasmine: Qasida Sahm, Qasida Queen, Qasida Purity and Amjad Mystery in the heart, and Qasida Senses in the top. For jasmine in front, start with Qasida Purity.
What jasmine smells like (and what it does not)
Jasmine is one of the great white flowers. The smell is heady and sweet, creamy and warm, with a green note like a crushed stem and, in some versions, a little fruit and tea. Sambac jasmine, the kind named in two FAAN bottles, leans creamier and fruitier than the common type.
Jasmine does not smell like jasmine tea in a cup, or like a sharp air freshener. In a good perfume it is round and lived-in. It also has a slightly animal undertone that makes it feel warm on skin.
How perfumers use jasmine: top, heart or base
Jasmine is the classic heart note. It is big enough to fill the middle of a scent and soft enough to hold other flowers together. Placed in the top, as in one FAAN bottle, it gives a bright, floral first impression instead of a citrus one.
It rarely appears in the base. If you would like to see the layers set out, the perfume notes pyramid guide covers it.
Jasmine in the FAAN range
Five bottles list it. Position is from the product pages.
- Qasida Purity: heart, as sambac jasmine with ylang-ylang and tuberose. Unisex, projection 2, longevity 3.
- Amjad Mystery: heart, as sambac jasmine with rose, saffron and osmanthus. An Extrait, unisex, projection 3, longevity 4.
- Qasida Queen: heart, with orange blossom and cashmeran. Written for her, projection 4, longevity 4.
- Qasida Sahm: heart, with blue coumarin, cedar and dry woods. Written for him, projection 3, longevity 4.
- Qasida Senses: top, with pear, bergamot and orange essence. Written for her, projection 3, longevity 3.
What it is paired with in these pyramids
- Purity: jasmine is one of three white flowers, so it is part of a full bouquet on pear and musk.
- Mystery: jasmine sits with saffron and rose over hazelnut and frankincense. It turns the sweetness smoky.
- Queen: jasmine is the quieter floral behind orange blossom, then vanilla, amber and coffee. It lightens a dark scent.
- Sahm: jasmine is a surprise in a masculine scent, held between fresh lavender and dry woods.
- Senses: jasmine opens the scent over pear and raspberry, so the first minute smells like a fruit-and-flower bouquet.
Wearing advice: season, sprays, who tends to like it
White flowers like warmth, but they can turn loud in heat.
- Purity and Senses suit spring and summer evenings. Three sprays each.
- Mystery and Queen are for autumn and winter. Two sprays.
- Sahm is the quiet one, with jasmine behind fruit and wood. Two sprays.
People who like floral, creamy and sweet scents usually like jasmine. If you find white flowers cloying, choose the bottle where jasmine hides: Sahm.
If you like jasmine, where to start
For jasmine in front, start with Qasida Purity. For jasmine with smoke and saffron, start with Amjad Mystery. For a fruity-floral bouquet, Qasida Senses. If you want jasmine tucked inside a fresh woody scent, Qasida Sahm.
Which FAAN perfume to choose helps if the list is too long, and all fourteen bottles sit on one page. If one shows as sold out, ask to be notified on the product page.
