Where to spray perfume: pulse points, myth and what actually works

Quick answer: Where to spray perfume? Chest, the side of the neck and one spray on clothing, from a hand's length away. The advice to use wrists and behind the ears is half true: warm spots make a scent bloom faster, but they do not make it last longer. Moisturised skin and fabric matter more than pulse points. Rubbing and cloud-spraying are the mistakes to drop first.
Everyone has heard the pulse point rule. It is a good place to start and a poor place to stop. Here is what it gets right, what it gets wrong, and what works in practice. Our shorter notes sit in the guide to wearing and storing a 200 ml perfume. This one explains the reasons.
The pulse point idea
Pulse points are places where blood vessels sit close to the skin: wrists, inner elbows, the neck, behind the ears. The idea is that this warmth lifts the scent. That part is true. Warmth speeds up evaporation, so the scent blooms and projects more.
But faster evaporation means the lighter parts of the scent also leave sooner. A warm spot gives you more projection in the first hour and not necessarily more hours. And wrists have a flaw: you wash them, wipe them and rub them against each other.
What heat really changes
Heat does two things. It makes a scent louder, and it makes it shorter. Cool skin does the opposite: the scent sits closer and lasts a bit longer. That is why the chest, which is warm but sheltered under clothing, works well. It gives a slow, steady release instead of a burst.
You can use this. For a scent you want to project, such as a fresh summer bottle like Amjad Coral, use a warm spot. For a heavy, long bottle such as Amjad Honour, you do not need the help, so pick a cooler spot or fewer sprays.
Chest, neck, clothes, hair
- Chest: under the collar, the middle of the upper chest. Warm, sheltered and close to your nose, so you also enjoy it.
- Neck: the side, below the ear. It reaches people at conversation distance. One spray is plenty for most bottles.
- Clothes: fabric keeps scent longest. One spray on a shirt, jumper or scarf. Test an inside seam first, because perfume can mark silk and light fabrics.
- Hair: hair holds scent well, but alcohol dries it. Spray a brush, not your scalp.
Skin first, then fabric. If you apply after a shower on moisturised skin, you get the most from either.
Spray distance and angle
Hold the bottle about 15 to 20 cm, a hand's length, from the skin. Closer, and you wet the spot and the scent smells harsh. Further away, and most of it lands on the floor. Spray at a slight angle so the mist falls on you and not in front of you. One spray at a time. Leave it to dry, then judge.
For how much to use, a typical rule is two sprays for an Extrait and three for an Eau de Parfum. A bottle like Qasida Signature, an Eau de Parfum, takes three. See how to wear an extrait for the dense bottles.
Mistakes
- Rubbing wrists. It bruises the top notes. Do not dab either, just wait.
- Walking through a cloud. Most of the scent never reaches you.
- Spraying in a small room. You breathe it for an hour and then think it has faded.
- Spraying on damp skin right out of the shower. Wait a minute, or use a towel to take the first water off.
- Judging it after thirty seconds. The opening is not the finished scent.
FAQ
Does perfume last longer on pulse points?
No. It blooms faster there, but evaporates sooner. Moisturised skin and clothes help longer wear.
Where to spray perfume if I want it to last all day?
One spray on the chest, one on the neck, one on clothing, after moisturising.
What if my bottle is sold out?
Ask to be notified on the product page. Delivery takes 3 to 6 working days in the Netherlands and 5 to 8 working days in the rest of the EU.
