Layering FAAN Amjad Kingdom with FAAN Amjad Mystery: powder and nut over amber

FAAN Amjad Kingdom Extrait de Parfum 200 ml bottle

Quick answer: To layer Amjad Kingdom and Amjad Mystery, spray Kingdom first on the chest and Mystery second on the neck, one or two sprays of each at most. Both Extraits have ambergris in the base, so the pair joins up at the bottom: Kingdom brings cool violet and powder, Mystery brings hazelnut, saffron and rose. This is our suggestion, not a rule from the maker, so test it on paper first.

Both bottles are Extraits for cold evenings, and between them they cover most of the dark, resinous side of the range. FAAN Amjad Kingdom and FAAN Amjad Mystery are two of the five FAAN Extraits. FAAN does not publish layering pairs, and what works on one skin may not work on another.

Why layer Amjad Kingdom and Amjad Mystery, and what it aims for

Ambergris sits in the base of both, so they share a salty, skin-like glow underneath. Both are resinous and listed for autumn and winter. That common floor lets two very different tops sit on it without fighting.

The aim is a cool, powdery scent with a warm, nutty centre. Think of a violet-scented powder on a cashmere jumper that has been left near a fire.

Kingdom brings the powder, the cool resin and the long hold. Mystery brings the nuts, the saffron and the sweetness of vanilla and sandalwood.

Order, sprays and spacing

Kingdom is the louder of the two, so it goes down first.

  1. One or two sprays of Kingdom on the chest, under the collar.
  2. Wait a minute.
  3. One or two sprays of Mystery on the side of the neck, or on a scarf.
  4. Keep the total to three, and do not rub.

Test on paper first. Spray each bottle on its own strip, hold them together, then try the pair on a forearm for a few hours. For where to put Extraits, read how to wear an extrait.

What you should smell at one hour and at six

At one hour: the first lift is gone. You should smell the resin of elemi and frankincense together, with pear and hazelnut sweetness over it, and violet and rose starting to open. Saffron begins to warm everything.

At six hours: the flowers have settled. Labdanum, amber, vanilla, sandalwood and musk make a soft, sweet, powdery base, with ambergris running through the whole thing. This is where the pair is at its best. Because both are rated for long wear, fabric can still carry it the next morning.

Where it clashes or turns heavy

  • Ambergris twice. The salty glow doubles. If you find it too much, use one spray of each.
  • Florals stacking. Violet, rose and jasmine together can turn perfumy or soapy.
  • Sweet and resin. Vanilla, benzoin, styrax and amber add up. Keep Mystery to one spray if it feels thick.
  • Warm rooms. In a heated restaurant or a hot month, this pair is too much.

Wearing it: season and occasion

Both are listed for autumn and winter. Kingdom for evenings and special occasions, Mystery for date nights and special occasions. That is where this pair belongs: dinner, a gallery opening, a long winter evening. Not the office. If you want to know more about the shared note, read ambergris in perfume, and for the full group of five see the Extraits ranked. To see the whole range, open all FAAN perfumes.
