The five FAAN Extraits ranked for value, strength and wearability

This ranking covers the five Extraits that list their notes: Amjad Honour, Amjad Mystery, Qasida Bidaya, Amjad Kingdom and Amjad Coral. The sixth, Amjad Status, has no notes listed yet, so we leave it out.

What you get with an Extrait

An Extrait de Parfum holds more fragrance oil than an Eau de Parfum. In general that means a denser scent that sits closer to the skin and stays longer, so you need fewer sprays. All bottles in the range are 200 ml, so an Extrait at 44.99 euros costs about 0.22 euro per ml. For the basics, read what an Extrait de Parfum is.

How we ranked them

Three things, in this order.

1. Value: price divided by the longevity rating. It is our own simple yardstick: euros per longevity point.
2. Strength: projection and longevity ratings from the product pages. These are our ratings, not lab numbers.
3. Wearability: how many seasons and moments each one covers.

The ranking

1. Honour. The strongest bottle at the lowest price. Frankincense, saffron, rose and oud over vanilla and ambergris. It is the choice for winter evenings and special occasions.

2. Mystery. Hazelnut, saffron and smoky rose, with sandalwood and ambergris at the base. Listed for date nights and special occasions. Softer than Honour, with a sweeter, nuttier mood.

3. Bidaya. Saffron, opoponax, vanilla bean, benzoin and leather. It ties with Mystery on the numbers. We put it third because it is the plainer of the two, though plenty of people will prefer that.

4. Kingdom. Violet, styrax, benzoin, ambergris and musk. It matches Honour's strength, but it costs 59.99 euros, about 0.30 euro per ml. You pay for a cooler, powdery style instead of extra performance.

5. Coral. Pear, bergamot, ginger, cedar, musk. Last on value because its longevity is 3 out of 5, but first on wearability: it is the only Extrait listed for spring and summer, and the only one for daily wear and the office.

Who each one suits

• Honour: you want one bold winter bottle and the best price.
• Mystery: you want warm and a little sweet, for dates.
• Bidaya: you want saffron and vanilla without smoke.
• Kingdom: you like powdery, cool resin and do not mind paying more.
• Coral: you want an Extrait for warm days and work.

How to wear them

Start with two sprays. Put one on the chest and one on a shirt. Extraits are dense, so more sprays make them louder, not better.
