Pepper in perfume: what it smells like and which FAAN bottles use it

Quick answer: Pepper in perfume is not one smell. Black pepper is dry and warm, white pepper is softer and earthier, pink pepper is rosy and fruity, and Sichuan pepper is lemony with a tingle. Four FAAN bottles use pepper, always in the top: Amjad Honour, Qasida Senses, Qasida Dunes and Qasida Queen. Start with Honour.
What pepper smells like, and what it does not
Pepper in a perfume rarely smells like the pepper mill. It is used to give a dry, bright spark to a scent, and each type does that differently.
- Black pepper: dry, warm and a bit smoky, the closest to what you expect.
- White pepper: quieter, earthier, a little musty in a good way.
- Pink pepper: not a real pepper but a berry. It is rosy, light and slightly sweet, with a sparkle.
- Sichuan pepper: lemony and fizzy, with a tingling quality, a bit like zest.
Pink pepper is the one that surprises people. It smells less of spice than of a bright, airy fruit.
How perfumers use pepper: top, heart or base
Pepper is mostly a top note. Its job is to wake up a scent in the first minutes, and the volatile oils burn off fast. In all four FAAN bottles it is a top note. What changes is what stands next to it: resin in Honour and Dunes, fruit in Senses and Queen. For the layer logic, see top, heart and base notes explained.
Pepper in the FAAN range
- Amjad Honour: Sichuan pepper in the top, with frankincense, elemi, cardamom and lemon. A bright, citrusy resin opening. Extrait de Parfum, projection 4, longevity 5.
- Qasida Senses: pink pepper in the top, with jasmine, pear, bergamot, orange essence, raspberry and red berries. Fruit and flowers, listed for her. Projection 3, longevity 3.
- Qasida Dunes: black peppercorn and white pepper in the top, with olibanum. Then patchouli, cypriol and leather in the heart, sandalwood, sugar and labdanum at the base. The only bottle where pepper is the main idea. Projection 4, longevity 4.
- Qasida Queen: pink pepper in the top, with cherry, clove and orange blossom. Dark fruit, coffee and vanilla underneath. Listed for her, projection 4, longevity 4.
What it is paired with in these pyramids
Sichuan pepper and lemon in Honour keep the frankincense from feeling heavy. In Dunes, two peppers share a top with olibanum, which makes the opening dry and smoky and leads straight into leather. In Senses and Queen, pink pepper is a sparkle on top of fruit: raspberry and pear in one, cherry and clove in the other.
Wearing advice: season, sprays, who tends to like it
The two resin bottles, Honour and Dunes, are listed for autumn and winter, and so is Queen. Senses is the spring and summer one. Pepper reads best in cool air, where its bite feels pleasant. One or two sprays are enough for Honour and Dunes, both loud at projection 4. People who like pepper tend to be people who find sweet scents boring. If sweetness is your problem, read perfume for people who dislike sweet scents.
If you like pepper, start with Amjad Honour
Honour is the best-known bottle in the range and one of our best sellers. Its pepper is the citrusy Sichuan kind, so the opening is bright, then it turns to patchouli, rose and saffron, and ends in vanilla, amber, oud and ambergris. If you want pepper to be the main event, jump to Dunes. The Amjad line, the Qasida line and the full range show every bottle mentioned here.
