Vetiver in perfume: what it smells like and which FAAN bottles use it

Quick answer: Vetiver perfume notes come from the roots of a tall grass, and they smell earthy, dry, a little smoky and slightly green. Three FAAN bottles contain it: Qasida Al-Badr and Qasida Sahm in the base, Amjad Kingdom in the top. If you want vetiver to be the star, start with Qasida Al-Badr.
What vetiver smells like (and what it does not)
Vetiver is a grass. The part used in perfume is the root, which is distilled for its oil. Think of damp earth after rain, dry hay, a cut root vegetable and a hint of smoke. In lighter forms it can be crisp and a bit bitter, close to grapefruit peel.
It does not smell sweet, floral or fruity. That is why it is used to dry out other notes. A sweet vanilla with vetiver under it turns dignified instead of sugary.
How perfumers use vetiver: top, heart or base
Vetiver is most often a base note. Its molecules are heavy and evaporate slowly, so it supports the scent for hours and gives the dry-down its shape. Less often it appears higher up, where it acts as a green, cool, earthy opening.
If you want to read this in context, our guide to the perfume notes pyramid shows how top, heart and base work together.
Vetiver in the FAAN range
Three bottles list it. The position comes from the product pages.
- Qasida Al-Badr: base, next to tonka, vanilla and patchouli. A calm, powdery, dry Eau de Parfum, unisex, projection 3 and longevity 3.
- Qasida Sahm: base, among oud, nagarmotha, musk, amber, leather accord and wolfwood. Written for him, fruit first, projection 3 and longevity 4.
- Amjad Kingdom: top, next to ambrette, elemi and hibiscus. An Extrait, unisex, projection 4 and longevity 5.
No other FAAN bottle lists vetiver. If you are looking at the Qasida or Amjad lines for it, these are the only three.
What it is paired with in these pyramids
Each bottle gives vetiver a different partner.
- In Al-Badr, bergamot, nutmeg and cardamom sit above it, with iris and sage in the middle. The vetiver is the spine of a dry spice scent.
- In Sahm, it stands among earthy materials: nagarmotha is another root, oud is dark wood, and leather is dry. Mango and raspberry sit on top, so the vetiver is the quiet middle between fruit and darkness.
- In Kingdom, it is in the opening with ambrette and elemi, then violet and resins. It makes the first minutes cool and grey-green before the amber warms the scent.
Wearing advice: season, sprays, who tends to like it
Vetiver suits cool, dry weather, and the two Qasida bottles cover spring and autumn (Al-Badr also winter). Kingdom is listed for autumn and winter.
- Two to three sprays of Al-Badr. One more is fine on a cold day.
- Two sprays of Sahm, plus one on the shirt.
- Two sprays of Kingdom. It is the strongest of the three.
People who like earthy, dry, woody scents tend to enjoy vetiver. If you want sweet, creamy or fruity, it may feel austere. Test it on skin rather than a paper strip, because earthy notes change with skin.
If you like vetiver, where to start
Start with Qasida Al-Badr. Vetiver sits first in its base and nothing sweet competes with it. If you want vetiver under fruit and a darker finish, move to Qasida Sahm. If you want it as a cool opening before an amber base, try Amjad Kingdom.

FAQ
Is vetiver a masculine or feminine note?
Neither. It is an earthy grass root and it appears in unisex scents. Al-Badr and Kingdom are unisex, Sahm is written for him.
Does vetiver last long?
Yes, in the base. It is one of the slow-evaporating materials, which is why vetiver bottles tend to settle into a long dry-down.
Which FAAN bottle has the most vetiver?
Al-Badr gives it the most room, because it is one of only four base notes. The other bottles list it among more notes.
