FAAN Qasida Al-Badr review: calm, dry and powdery

FAAN Qasida Al-Badr is the quiet one in the Qasida line. It is dry, a little powdery and steady from start to finish. If you want a perfume you can wear to work without a second thought, this is a strong candidate. This is not a customer review and it has no star score. It is a plain description built from the listed notes.
We are an independent retailer of FAAN fragrances. The bottle is FAAN Qasida Al-Badr, a 200 ml Eau de Parfum, listed as unisex. Al-Badr means the full moon in Arabic. You may see it spelled Al Badr or Albadr.
Notes
- Top: bergamot, nutmeg, cardamom
- Heart: iris, sage, cedarwood
- Base: vetiver, tonka, vanilla, patchouli
Accords: aromatic, spicy and woody. It is the shortest note list in this guide, and that is part of its charm. There is less going on, so it reads cleanly.
How it smells
The opening is light and bright, with bergamot and a pinch of spice. Nutmeg is warm and slightly sweet. Cardamom is cool and green. Together they feel like a clean kitchen with fresh coffee, not like a perfume counter.
The heart is where the powder comes in. Iris smells soft and a bit cool, like face powder or the inside of an old leather bag. Sage adds an herbal note. Cedarwood keeps it dry and pencil-like.
The base is calm. Vetiver is earthy and dry. Tonka and vanilla add a gentle sweetness, like a warm biscuit. Patchouli is kept low, so it gives depth without the heavy, hippie side. The final scent is a quiet, dry, slightly sweet wood.
The notes explained
- Iris: a powdery, cool, earthy floral. Used here more like a soft texture than a flower.
- Vetiver: a dry grass root. Smells smoky, green and earthy.
- Tonka: a bean that smells like vanilla, almond and hay.
- Sage: clean, herbal and slightly camphor-like.
Strength and staying power
We rate both projection and longevity at 3 out of 5. That is the middle. It is not a loud perfume and it is not fleeting either. Expect a few hours of clear scent and a faint trace afterwards. Three sprays work well here, more than you would use for the heavy Extraits in the Amjad line.
When to wear it
It is listed for autumn, winter and spring, for daily wear and the office. That makes it one of the most flexible bottles in the range.
- At work, in a shared space.
- On a quiet weekend.
- Under a coat in cold weather, where its dry woods hold up.
It is not made for hot summer days. For those, see the best FAAN perfumes for spring and summer.
Who it suits
If you do not like sweet scents, this is a good place to begin. It suits people who want something that smells clean and a little serious. It does not suit people who want a big, loud, sweet perfume. For those, look at Qasida Signature or Qasida Queen.
Another quiet option is Qasida Purity, which is floral and creamy where Al-Badr is dry and woody. For a general overview, read the Qasida collection guide.
Buying it
The bottle is 200 ml and the price is on the product page. Orders to the Netherlands take 3 to 6 working days in total: 1 to 2 for processing and 2 to 4 for transport. To the rest of the EU it takes 5 to 8 working days: 2 to 3 for processing and 3 to 5 for transport. Shipping is free in the Netherlands from €75. If the bottle shows as sold out, ask to be notified on the product page.
Al-Badr or Purity or Coral for work?
All three work in an office, but they feel different. Al-Badr is dry and woody, a scent for a person in a grey sweater. Purity is soft and creamy, a scent for someone who wants to smell like clean linen with a floral core. Coral is fresh and citrusy, a scent for a hot open-plan office. Pick the one that matches your mood and your room.
Wearing tips
Because the projection is medium, you can use three sprays: one on the neck, one on the chest, one on clothes. Check the result after an hour. If you can only just catch it on yourself, you are in the right range for work.
If you want the deep, resinous side of the range, look at Amjad Honour.
