Does moisturiser make perfume last longer?

Quick answer: Does lotion make perfume last longer? A little, yes, if your skin is dry and the lotion is unscented. Perfume clings better to moisturised skin than to dry skin. The effect is modest, though: the base notes of the perfume matter more than any lotion. Apply an unscented lotion after the shower, wait a minute, then spray.
We are an independent retailer, and this is general perfume knowledge, not a lab test. We have not tested lotions with FAAN bottles, so treat every claim here as a sensible rule of thumb. For the bigger picture on staying power, read how long FAAN perfumes last.
Why dry skin loses scent
Perfume sits on your skin and evaporates. Skin that is dry and thirsty takes up the liquid and releases the fragrance quickly, while skin with a light film of moisture or oil holds on to it a little longer. That is why people with dry skin often feel their perfume disappears fast, and why people with oily skin often say it lasts.
It is not a big switch. A rough guide: lotion can add a little to the wearing time of a scent that already has a heavy base, and it cannot rescue a scent that is built from light notes. Citrus and pear fade in the first hour whatever you put underneath.
Your skin type also changes how much you notice. Dry skin gains the most, normal skin gains a little, and oily skin gains almost nothing. If you are unsure, do a simple test: moisturise one forearm and leave the other bare, spray the same scent on both, and compare after four hours. Your own nose is the only fair judge.
Unscented versus scented lotion
Unscented is the safe choice. It gives the perfume a neutral base and does not compete. Choose a plain moisturiser with no added fragrance.
A scented body lotion can work if it is the same family as your perfume, but it often clashes. A vanilla-coconut lotion under Qasida Signature, for example, can make the sweetness louder, and a floral lotion under a smoky scent can muddy it. If you want to match, do it on purpose, and test on a small area first.
Oils and balms
A thin layer of unscented body oil or balm can hold a scent a little longer than lotion, because fragrance molecules cling to oil. The trade-off is that oil can shift how a scent smells and can leave a greasy mark on clothes. Use very little. A heavy layer under a resinous scent can make it feel thick.
If your skin is oily already, you probably do not need any of this.
What not to do
- Do not rub your wrists. Rubbing warms the oil and breaks the opening early.
- Do not spray on wet skin straight after the shower. Let the lotion absorb for a minute or two.
- Do not use a thick, shiny cream. It can lift the scent off the skin.
- Do not lotion over perfume. It smears the scent and dilutes the top.
- Do not skip the clothes. Fabric holds scent far longer than skin, with or without lotion.
A simple routine
- Shower and pat dry.
- Apply an unscented moisturiser to the places you will spray, such as neck and chest.
- Wait a minute.
- Spray two times on skin from about 15 cm, and one time on a shirt or scarf.
- Do not rub.
For a strong, resinous bottle such as Amjad Honour, rated 5 out of 5 for longevity, lotion adds little. It helps most with softer scents on dry skin. See how to make perfume last on clothes and where to spray perfume for more.

FAQ
Does moisturiser make perfume last longer?
A little, on dry skin and with an unscented product. It does not replace a good base.

Only if it matches the perfume. Unscented is safer.
Can I put perfume on right after lotion?
Wait a minute so the lotion can sink in, then spray.
