Match her style, not yours

The most common gift mistake is to choose what you like. Look at what she wears now. Does she reach for flowers, vanilla, or something clean and fresh? Does she wear scent every day, or only for occasions? Does she like to be noticed? If she wears a soft floral at the moment, a heavy resinous scent will feel like a stranger. A gift a small step away from what she knows is a lovely surprise.

Qasida Signature is warm and sweet without being sticky: bergamot, cinnamon, almond and cardamom, then orange blossom, coconut and guaiacwood, then praline, vanilla, dry amber and cashmeran. Unisex, listed for autumn and winter, evenings and special occasions. Strength 3, longevity 4, €54.99. This suits a mum who likes cosy scents, bakery smells and warm vanilla.

Avoid: too loud or too sweet

If your mum likes quiet, avoid the strong ones. Qasida Queen is rated 4 out of 5 for strength and is a sweet cherry and coffee scent for date nights. It is a lovely scent for the right person, but it is not a quiet gift. The same goes for Amjad Honour and Amjad Kingdom, which are rated 5 for longevity and are for people who already like strong scents.
