Can you wear FAAN Qasida Dunes in summer? Honest advice for the heat

Quick answer: Can you wear FAAN Qasida Dunes in summer? You can, but it is not the best season for it. Dunes is listed for autumn and winter, and its pepper, patchouli, leather and labdanum turn thick when it is hot. If you want it anyway, use one spray on clothes in the evening, not on skin in the sun. For daytime heat, pick a lighter bottle.
Qasida Dunes is a dry, dark Eau de Parfum from the Qasida line, rated 4 out of 5 for both strength and longevity. Those ratings are the whole story. A scent that projects and lasts is a pleasure in a cold street and a burden on a hot train. We are an independent retailer, and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong bottle for July.
What summer does to this pyramid
The top is olibanum, black peppercorn and white pepper. Olibanum is frankincense, smoky and resinous. Pepper is sharp. In cool air that sharpness feels crisp. In heat it gets louder and a bit scratchy, and skin temperature pushes it out faster.
The heart is patchouli, cypriol and leather. Cypriol is a smoky, earthy, slightly bitter root. These are heavy, dark materials. The base of sandalwood, sugar and labdanum is warm and sticky. Labdanum is an amber-like resin, and in the heat it feels like wearing a wool scarf indoors.
None of that is bad. It is just made for cold. The listed moments are evenings and cool days, which says the same thing.
How to adapt: sprays, placement, time of day
If you want to wear Dunes on a warm evening, change three things.
- Sprays: one, not three. With strength at 4 out of 5, one spray is already clear.
- Placement: on a shirt or the back of the neck, away from the pulse points that run hot. Clothes release it more slowly than skin.
- Time: after sunset, or in air-conditioned places. Not before a walk in full sun.
A shirt sprayed once from about 15 cm away will carry a soft pepper-and-wood trace through an evening without the heaviness. Test an inside seam first on light fabric.
Where it shines instead
Autumn and winter. A damp coat, a cold platform, a long dinner. This is where the leather and smoke feel at home and where two sprays make sense. Our guide to the best FAAN perfumes for autumn and winter puts Dunes next to the other cold-weather bottles.
Better summer bottles in the range, if you want to keep the same mood
If you like Dunes because it is dry and woody, not sweet, these get you closer in summer:
- Amjad Coral: the freshest bottle, with pear and ginger over clean cedar and musk. Listed for spring and summer. It is the one we would reach for in the heat.
- Qasida Al-Badr: calm, dry and powdery, with nutmeg, cardamom, iris and vetiver. Listed for autumn, winter and spring, with a rating of 3 out of 5 for both strength and longevity. Gentler than Dunes, and much easier in warm spring weather.
- Qasida Sahm: fruit first, oud last, listed for autumn and spring. A better fit for a mild day.

Mistakes to avoid
- Three or four sprays "because it fades". It will not fade; it will thicken.
- Spraying on bare skin before the beach or a long walk.
- Leaving the bottle in a hot car or on a sunny windowsill. Heat damages any perfume, and a 200 ml bottle lasts long enough for that to matter.
- Judging it on a hot test strip in midday. Try it in the evening.
