Patchouli in perfume: what it smells like and which FAAN bottles use it

FAAN Amjad Honour Extrait de Parfum 200 ml bottle

Quick answer: Patchouli perfume notes smell earthy and woody, with a dark, slightly sweet, sometimes cocoa-like depth. It sits in the heart or the base and gives a perfume weight. Five FAAN bottles use it: Qasida Al-Badr, Amjad Honour, Qasida Senses, Qasida Dunes and Qasida Queen. If you like patchouli, start with Amjad Honour, or with Al-Badr if you want it gentle and dry.

Patchouli has a reputation. Say the word and many people think of a 1970s head shop. The material itself is more varied than that, and in a modern pyramid it is mostly a quiet bass note. Here is what it does and where you will find it in the range.

What patchouli smells like, and what it does not

Patchouli comes from a leafy plant, and its scent is damp earth, dry wood and a trace of dark chocolate or tobacco. Some people also notice a camphor-like freshness. It is rich, but not sharp.

It does not smell of incense sticks, unless it is paired with that. On its own it is simply earthy. It also does not have to be heavy: with white musk, vanilla or sandalwood around it, it turns soft and smooth.

How perfumers use patchouli: top, heart or base

Patchouli is almost always a heart or base note. It lasts for hours, and it holds the lighter materials in place. As a base note it gives the dry-down its grip. As a heart note it adds an earthy shade to flowers and spice. It is rare in the top, because it is too slow.

Patchouli in the FAAN range

Five bottles list patchouli:

  • Qasida Al-Badr, base: with vetiver, tonka and vanilla. Dry and powdery, Eau de Parfum, projection and longevity 3 out of 5.
  • Amjad Honour, heart: first in the list, with rose, saffron, orange blossom and geranium. Extrait, projection 4 out of 5.
  • Qasida Senses, base: with white musk, sandalwood and woody notes. Soft and sweet, Eau de Parfum, 3 out of 5.
  • Qasida Dunes, heart: first in the list, with cypriol and leather. Dry and peppery, Eau de Parfum, projection 4 out of 5.
  • Qasida Queen, base: with vanilla, amber and coffee. Dark and sweet, Eau de Parfum, projection 4 out of 5.

What patchouli is paired with in these pyramids

  • Vetiver, tonka and vanilla (Al-Badr) smooth it into a dry, powdery base.
  • Rose and saffron (Honour) turn it into a warm, spicy floral heart.
  • White musk and sandalwood (Senses) take the edge off and make it creamy.
  • Cypriol and leather (Dunes) make it drier and smokier.
  • Vanilla, amber and coffee (Queen) make it dark, sweet and gourmand.

Same note, five jobs. That is why a person who dislikes "patchouli" may still enjoy a bottle where it plays a small part.

Wearing advice: season, sprays and who tends to like it

Al-Badr is listed for autumn, winter and spring, and daily wear and office, so it is the easiest. Honour, Dunes and Queen are listed for autumn and winter, for evenings, cool days and date nights. Senses is listed for spring and summer, with patchouli as a quiet base. Three or four sprays for the Eau de Parfum bottles. Two or three for Honour, which is an Extrait.

Patchouli suits people who like woody, earthy or warm scents. If you dislike it, test the bottle where it is in the base (Senses, Queen, Al-Badr) before the ones where it leads the heart (Honour, Dunes).

If you like patchouli, start with Amjad Honour

Honour has patchouli first in its heart, plus rose and saffron, and it is one of our best sellers. Read the Amjad Honour review if you want the whole walk. If you prefer it soft, take Al-Badr; the Qasida Al-Badr review shows how. Vanilla changes patchouli the most, and the vanilla guide shows why. Looking for a gift?
